The Kingston bridge is the culmination in a ten year process, carried out by bradford on Avon town council to provide a new safe pedestrian and cycle crossing over the river Avon. The £35million Kingston Mill development presented a unique opportunity to improve links across the town, and reduce the need for pedestrians and cyclists to use the busy town bridge, promoting more sustainable forms of transport.

The new bridge spans 37m across the river in a very sensitive location approximately 65m from the grade 1 listed bridge, which is also a scheduled ancient monument, and a number of other listed buildings.

The design ethos was to create a bridge which maintains the views of, and from the town bridge. The desire to keep the river corridor clear, and any new structure as far, both physically and visually from the town bridge as possible lead to the assymetric cable-stayed design. This concept allows the bridge deck to be kept as transparent and elegant as possible, forming a contempoprary visual counterpoint to the traditional town bridge.
