The renovation of an existing period property and the addition of a high-specification, contemporary style, extension and garage. MLDE provided structural design engineering duties and worked closely alongside Project Architect Stan Bolt.
The existing fabric was sympathetically repaired and upgraded including replacement of the thatched roof and repairs to the fragile rat-trap masonry.
A steel-framed glass atrium acts as an intermediate element both supporting the interventions into the existing structure and linking it to the contemporary volume beyond. The atrium also houses a bespoke steel and glass stair structure.
The new structure comprises reinforced concrete floor slabs supported by a combination of understated reinforced concrete walls toward the centre of the volume and 3 ultra-minimal steel-bar columns. The first floor volume floats above the largely open ground floor as a cedar-clad timber box.
